Hydro and Haiti
In keeping with our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint
at Grace’s Places properties, tenants at Dalton Road were
challenged to reduce their electrical consumption for twenty
days between Jan 23rd and February 12th., with an amount
equal to ten times the energy savings being donated to Doctors
Without Borders (MSF) for relief work in Haiti. Thanks to
a 15% reduction in electrical consumption Grace’s Places
was able to contribute $725 to this worthy cause. Thanks
to all tenants who participated.

Laundry Room Updated
The new laundry room at Dalton Road opens today. Well, it’s not a new room, but pretty much everything in it is new, including an EnergyStar-rated Huebsch Horizon front-loading washer and a pair of matching Huebsch dryers. Not only will the new washer save water (and detergent) but its gentle tumbling action means that clothes last longer (and come out of the washer cleaner) while the high G-force spin cycle will result in shorter drying time. And since these machines have 40% greater capacity than our former top-load washer and single dryer the laundry room will now be able to handle almost three times as much laundry per hour than was previously possible.
In addition to the new equipment the laundry room has new flooring, new energy-efficient lighting and new furnishings (including a built-in laundry tub for hand-washing).
A second washer will be added in the coming month

Helping Tenants Help Others
Best wishes to Alison J. of Dalton Road as she heads off to Costa Rica
at the end of the summer to volunteer for 10 weeks with Youth Challenge
International. YCI works in several under-developed countries, and in the
case of Costa Rica the volunteers will be partnering with local agencies
to improve infrastructure (such as schools and playgrounds, aqueducts,
community centres, health posts and national parks).
Volunteers not only donate their time but also must pay their own expenses
(in this case, air fare and $3,700 in living expenses). And while Grace's
Places generally supports charitable endeavors in the communities where
tenants live this seems to be a worthwhile exception (and it's worth
noting that YCI spends almost all of its revenue on programs, rather
than administration and fund-raising). Accordingly, Grace's Places
will recognize
Alison's selfless volunteerism with a contribution of $1,000 to offset
her costs.

Tenants contribute to Streethaven at the Crossroads
Once again this year Grace's Places will be supporting the work of
Streethaven at the Crossroads... but this year our corporate donation
has been boosted by donations from many of the tenants of Dalton Road
who agreed to pay this year's "voluntary" rent increase.
Their contributions added $1,150 to this year's donation of $5,000.
Thanks to Vernita and Hugh, Tania, Dan and Lara, Peter and Jane, Shannon
M and Adam, Shannon D, Alison and Naana
Founded in 1965, Streethaven at the Crossroads serves the needs of women
who are trying to rebuild their lives by offering emergency shelter, counseling
and retraining.
